Agree, Apologize, Join, Distract

I’m often asked how to diffuse agitation for someone living with dementia.  Certainly, the best strategy is to avoid it altogether, but even with the best care, moments of anxiety in a person living with dementia happen, sometimes, seemingly out of nowhere.  Some strategies can minimize anxiety and escalation to agitation:

paying attention to our client’s or loved one’s level of engagement in activities which promote purpose and... Read More

ONE Question to ask when searching for a long term care facility

By: Cyndy Wednesday May 24, 2017 comments

“How do I know what facilities to consider if I need to move my loved one?”

THAT is a topic of discussion in some of our recent care partners’ support group meetings.  As I’ve toured more facilities, spoken with senior professionals, and collaborated with other dementia experts in our area to provide consultation and teaching,  ONE question stands out to me as THE FIRST question I would ask when searching for a long term memory care facility.  The answer to this ONE question tells us how much the leadership team of the... We are a 501c3 organization!

Our “Dementia-Friendly Communities of Northern Colorado”® volunteer initiative is officially a nonprofit organization now!   Since we started in November, 2015,  the momentum for this effort has been so positive, that we are able to partner as an “official”  501c3 corporation with other organizations in Northern Colorado to make our communities increasingly more dementia-aware and dementia-friendly.

To that end, our 2017 goals are bold.  They require collaboration among many of us in Northern Colorado which is why our goals are fully... Read More

Contented Dementia

Penny Garner, Contented Dementia Trust founder

Dad was a brilliant researcher and fisherman, but he was an even better father.  So, when he shared his concern with me several years ago that his thinking was foggy,  I started to do some research of my own.  I realized we were headed on the dementia journey, not knowing at the time where the journey would take us.  With divine timing and circumstances, three weeks after Dad shared his frustration with me, I was... 2016 Goals in Review

Every 3 seconds someone in the world develops dementia.  Age is the biggest risk factor for dementia.  Research is exploding with potential treatments and "cures" for various causes of dementia.  Until the "cures" are found, we all can learn simple strategies and techniques so that our friends and neighbors walking the dementia journey don't have to walk alone.    That's what the “Dementia-Friendly Communities of Northern Colorado” initiative is all about.  We are leveraging the expertise, resources, activities, and momentum in our communities so... Northern Colorado Keeps Rocking!

June in Northern Colorado has been a month of increasing dementia awareness and momentum building for "Dementia-Friendly Communities of Northern Colorado."   In addition to the communication strategies class taught by Katie Fahrenbruch (Alzheimer's Association Regional Director) open to the public, people from many agencies and organizations have participated in dementia education this month: The Community Advisory Committee, Foothills Gateway, The Northern Colorado Pulmonary Clinic, The Loveland Chilson Senior Center, The Community Case Managers at UC Health, and several groups of staff at... Dementia Care Partner Grants

Tuesday June 7, 2016 comments

Care Partners in Northern Colorado:

You might want to know about this!  Grants are available for dementia care partners and awarded on a quarterly basis.

This is sponsored/funded through Home Instead and Hilarity for Charity.

They award 3 types of grants:

Year Long - 25 hours/week for 52 weeks

Mid-Length - 15 hours/week for 52 weeks

Short Term - 1 time grant/25 hours, in hourly increments

Seems that a care partner in Northern Colorado ought to be the next to receive one of these grants. Read More
